Why can’t a parking garage be beautiful? Why should art be kept behind closed doors? Why not create a place where form and function merge perfectly, with unexpected benefits to residents, tenants and visitors alike? As Bedrock’s first ground-up development, The Z presented a unique opportunity for innovation, allowing our team to reimagine what a parking structure could be. This ten-story garage with a 3-D style facade features custom artwork on every floor, amazing retail and entertainment destinations, and an alley repositioned as a popular public space, complete with a beer garden, art gallery and speakeasy craft cocktail bar.
In an effort to create a one-of-a-kind experience with art for the public to enjoy, Bedrock commissioned more than 20 world-renowned street artists, giving each artist a specific floor to showcase their work. Next, we wrapped the ground level with engaging shops and retail spaces, including a boutique sneaker store, yoga studio, fast-casual salad concept, comic book store, and a hip bowling alley with a full restaurant and bar. To draw even more interest to the area, Bedrock transformed the alley into The Belt, with a cobblestone walkway, rotating community art shows called Public Matters, and the aforementioned amenities. As a result, The Z has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Huffington Post. By investing in public space and exploring new ideas, we’re re-defining ground-up construction — and creating new advantages for tenants, stakeholders, and Detroit residents.
