When Bedrock took on its first ground-up construction project, The Z, we wanted to do more than build a parking garage — we wanted to redefine the category. Part of our approach was wrapping the lower floors of the garage in unique retail — which included the Standby restaurant and The Skip biergarten.
Standby is a hip, dynamic restaurant with an eclectic menu featuring locally sourced food served in an art-filled, creative environment with works from Cleon Peterson and more. Bedrock re-envisioned the alley behind the garage and restaurant as The Belt, a welcoming public space with a cobblestone walkway. While the official entrance to the eatery is an old elevator shaft, those “in the know” come in for craft cocktails through our back-door speakeasy entrance in The Belt. The hip hangout spot is also home to regular public art shows, bringing more traffic to the restaurant and more culture to the city.
The Skip is The Belt’s unique biergarten, set against a backdrop mural by world-renowned street artist Shepard Fairey. Hidden within the skyscrapers of Downtown Detroit, it gives off an easygoing vibe in a great outdoor atmosphere — with frozen drinks, pitchers of beer, and the perfect food to compliment a night out in the city.
