DETROIT [July 21, 2025] - Library Street Collective and Bedrock have enlisted Detroit-based artist Tyrrell Winston—known for repurposing basketballs and other objects into abstract sculptures—to present HORSE: A Game for Everyone, an interactive art installation at 1001 Woodward Ave. Opening on Friday, Aug. 1, and inspired by Winston’s signature use of found materials, the free installation will reimagine a basketball court into a site of creativity, nostalgia and community engagement.
Central to Winston’s installation, a nod to the classic playground game H.O.R.S.E., is a sculptural “hoop tree,” a basketball hoop that has been transformed into a sprawling, seven-armed structure that supports 21 hoops at varying heights, angles and orientations. Visitors are encouraged to pick up and shoot the ball at the part-monument, part-playground.
“Basketball has always been more than a game; it’s a vessel for memory, identity and expression,” Winston said. “With HORSE, I wanted to create a space where people can see themselves in the work, literally and metaphorically. Every shot taken, every moment spent here, becomes part of the piece’s evolving narrative.”
Foregrounding Winston’s sculpture will be his most ambitious and expansive “Punishment Painting” to date. At 30 feet high and 50 feet long, the monumental canvas underscores the artist’s continued exploration of the designated value of signed objects. Through abstracted appropriation of celebrity athletes’ signatures, Winston challenges the concepts of fame, grandiosity and authenticity.
Mounted along the wall will be one of Winston’s signature large-scale basketball sculptures, composed entirely of found, weathered balls. These assemblages explore the embedded histories of discarded objects, each ball bearing the marks of time, use and neglect. As with much of Winston’s work, the sculpture welcomes reflection on the broader tension between what society discards and what it chooses to preserve.
“Since its inception, Library Street Collective has been passionate about making art accessible to the Detroit community,” Library Street Collective Partner Anthony Curis said. “We’re thrilled to present Tyrrell Winston’s ‘HORSE,’ a participatory activation inviting the public to experience Tyrrell’s artistic vision through the medium of sport.”
“We invite Detroiters and visitors to experience something totally unexpected, yet deeply familiar, at HORSE,” Bedrock’s Vice President of Experience Frenchy Eid said. “This family friendly activation reflects the power and beauty of reinvesting in what others may have once overlooked. We take pride in creating free, joyful moments downtown—especially those that celebrate our city’s resilience and creativity.”
HORSE: A Game for Everyone will be free and open to the public Friday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, at Bedrock’s 1001 Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit. The activation will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays 4 to 9 p.m., Fridays 4 to 10 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The installation will also have a merchandise store and a “locker room” photo opportunity.

About Library Street Collective
Since 2012, Library Street Collective has connected Detroit to the global arts community while supporting the city’s creative renaissance. The gallery’s influence extends beyond its walls into public, private, and heritage spaces, alongside digital programs that raise awareness and funds for various nonprofits. Large-scale public projects like the development of the Little Village neighborhood, Detroit’s cultural corridor fostering an inclusive community centered around the arts, uses art as a medium for both inspiration and creativity. At the center of the neighborhood is the Shepherd, an adaptive reuse of a century-old Romanesque-style church that aims to blend gallery, institution, and community space while fostering collaboration with local and international arts organizations.
